More Criticism For Right To Rent Legislation

Lib Dem peer Baroness Hamwee has scorned the Government for rolling out Right to Rent legislation nationally, when a pilot scheme had not even finished!

Under the new rules, landlords and their agents are now responsible for ensuring that all new tenants have the right to live in this country, by checking their passports, visas, etc. Any slip ups will cost them dear, with hefty fines potentially imposed on anyone who is fooled by a fake ID.

The Baroness argues that the Government is merely passing the buck: having failed to protect our borders properly, they are using landlords and agents as immigration police, with no formal training offered, and a help line that is only open for limited hours.

What’s more, she says the new rules will inevitably breed discrimination as landlords, afraid of the serious consequences that will befall them if they get it wrong, will naturally favour the “easy option” of someone who is clearly British.

Mind you, as 12 million Britons don’t have a passport, even that could be tricky!

Property Hot Spots

Rightmove has revealed the UK’s property hot spots (outside London), by calculating the average time it takes for property to go from “For Sale” to “Sold STC” on their website.

You might expect Bristol, which was the most searched for place on the site during the month of January, to also be the hottest.

But, no! Shock, horror! Despite average sales taking just 31 days to be agreed, Bristol was beaten into seventh place! Dartford in Kent is apparently much hotter.

Perhaps if there had been a higher volume of homes coming onto the market over the last few months, Bristol would have seen more and quicker sales.

Fancy Getting Away From It All?

If your numbers come up in the next National Lottery, you might want to avoid the paparazzi by buying yourself a Greek Island.

Contact Aylesford International in Chelsea for full details

Kaltsonisi covers more than 350,000 sq ft, includes a late 17th century church, protected forestry, and has planning permission to build a villa. At about £4 million, it’s a snip!

Although… when I say “getting away from it all” … the island is just a 70ft swim from neighbouring Paxos!
